“normal.”

After illness, burnout, grief, or unexpected change, many of us spend far too much energy trying to get back to who we used to be. But what if there is no going back?

In this episode I explore the difference between recovery and reconstruction, the challenge of working with a brain that now has its own ideas about pacing, and why intelligence doesn’t disappear when it changes shape.

Along the way we wander through:

Life aboard the canal during rainy days

Measuring energy in spoons rather than ambition

The myth of returning to your former self

Learning new ways to think, create and communicate

Why adaptation is one of humanity’s greatest strengths

Building external systems when memory and focus become unreliable

Finding humour in the chaos of everyday life

This is a gentle, reflective conversation about resilience, identity, and discovering that sometimes growth arrives disguised as limitation.

As always, expect a little philosophy, a little psychology, a few canal-side observations, and the occasional wandering thought that somehow finds its way back home.

Thank you for listening.

<a landed exactly where I intended it to.

But because the flow is beginning to return.

After months of rebuilding, relearning, and occasionally staring at my own notes wondering what on earth I meant when I wrote them, I can feel the rhythm of broadcasting starting to settle back into place.

Radio has always been a strange mixture of preparation and trust. You gather thoughts, themes, stories, observations, and then at some point you simply have to step onto the tightrope and walk.

Today’s show felt a little more like walking and a little less like clinging to the rope while hoping nobody notices.

We explored thoughts on identity, adaptation, healing, and the curious human habit of believing everyone else knows what they are doing. From the canal-side observations of ducks, tea, and warm weather to deeper reflections on rebuilding life after change, it turned into one of those conversations that unfolded naturally rather than being forced.

The YouTube stream survived too, which is always a bonus.

Looking at it with my own highly critical eyes, I can still see all the things I want to improve. The pauses. The hesitations. The moments where I wander off down a side canal and have to find my way back to the main river.

But that is part of the process.

The truth is that broadcasting is not returning to what it was before. It is becoming something new.

And this morning, for the first time in a while, I caught a glimpse of that.

Not half bad, as we say here in Britain when we are secretly quite pleased with ourselves.

🎙️ Watch the replay here:

YOUTUBE LINK

Thank you for travelling alongside me while I rediscover Kate Silveness explores the ancient symbol of the well as a meeting place between the conscious and unconscious mind, between everyday life and the deeper currents that shape it.

The witch of folklore was often the keeper of hidden knowledge, standing at the edge of mystery, intuition, healing, and transformation. The well itself represents memory, wisdom, dreams, stories, and the parts of ourselves that remain unseen beneath the surface.

Drawing on mythology, psychology, personal reflection, and storytelling, this episode invites listeners to consider what might be discovered when we stop running from the darkness and begin listening to what it has to teach.

Topics include:

• The symbolism of the well in myth and folklore
• The witch as keeper of hidden knowledge
• Jungian ideas of the unconscious
• Intuition, imagination, and inner wisdom
• Why darkness is not always something to fear
• Personal transformation and self-discovery
• Listening to the deeper currents beneath everyday life

The Witch in the Well is not about fortune telling or superstition. It is about curiosity, self-exploration, psychology, story, and the hidden landscapes that shape who we are.

Pull up a bucket. The water is deeper than it first appears.

About the Podcast

The Witch in the Well is a podcast exploring psychology, mythology, consciousness, storytelling, creativity, recovery, intuition, and the mysteries of being human.

Hosted by Kate Silveness from a narrowboat on the Kennet & Avon Canal, each episode offers reflections from the borderlands between reason and wonder, inviting listeners to think a little deeper and look a little closer into the wells within themselves.

<a class="image-link pretending they know what they are doing.

Here are the latest Updates on What’s Happening on the Tow Path & Dark Moon Rocks

Morning Show still there but staggering a bit to find a rhythm after the Stroke. Warm weather on the canal. Water moving slowly, murky vegetation, brown soup. Morning air already carrying heat. Ducks acting like they own the waterways again. Kettle whistles, ropes creaking, birds arguing in hedges.

Some Show Notes - Theme one: The Myth of “Getting Back to Normal” A lot of us think healing is returning to who we were before illness, burnout, grief, upheaval. But maybe there is no “back”. Maybe life is adaptation. Reconstruction. Reorientation.

A few Morning Show threads:

learning new ways to think/work/live

using notes and external systems instead of forcing old methods

intelligence isn’t diminished because it changes shape

humans survive through adaptation, not rigidity

Sometimes healing is not rebuilding the old house. Sometimes it is learning how to live differently inside your new world.

What changed you permanently — but also taught you something valuable?

Theme two: Rituals Humans Pretend They Do Not Have

Keep it grounded in ordinary life: morning tea or coffee, favourite mugs, checking weather apps, touching grounding objects, saying goodbye to pets before work, radio routines, canal lock routines.

Rituals calm the nervous system. Repetition creates emotional continuity. Ritual creates meaning during uncertainty.

Theme three: Where Do We Think We Live Inside Ourselves? Some people experience themselves less as a whole body and more as awareness.

Morning Show Talking Points:

feeling like “the observer”

awareness behind the eyes

only noticing body parts when using them

hands, feet, skin appearing through sensation

modern neuroscience suggesting the self is assembled moment-to-moment

Maybe consciousness is less a fixed thing and more an ongoing act of assembly. Sometimes it feels like awareness borrowing a body for a while.

Do you feel located somewhere inside yourself?

Behind the eyes? In the chest? Everywhere? Nowhere?

Perhaps being human is stranger than we admit. We spend our lives walking around inside stories, rituals, memories and bodies we barely understand… and somehow still manage to make tea and get through Thursdays.

Updates From The Chaos Laboratory

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" philosophy lecture from a woman trying to reassemble herself with tea, sarcasm, and radio waves.

Which, frankly, feels about right.

Today’s live show was about what happens after life interrupts the script. Not in the dramatic Hollywood sense where violins swell and everyone suddenly discovers the meaning of life while staring at a sunset.

Real interruption is messier than that.

It is waking up and realising your energy works differently. Your words do not arrive in the same order. Your confidence has wandered off into the woods carrying half your personality in a Tesco bag.

And yet… the kettle still clicks on. The ducks still demand breakfast. The canal still moves. Life, annoyingly, continues.

We talked about illness and identity this morning. About the strange grief that arrives when your body changes the rules without asking permission first. Not just stroke recovery, but all the ways human beings quietly lose versions of themselves. Chemo. Burnout. Divorce. Menopause. Grief. Depression. Redundancy. The slow collapse of the person you thought you were going to be.

Nobody really prepares us for that bit.

Modern culture is obsessed with optimisation. Bounce back. Push through. Ten hacks to become your best self before breakfast.

Meanwhile half the population is sat in pyjamas staring into tea wondering where their old self disappeared to.

There is a strange loneliness in rebuilding. Especially when you used to be capable. Especially when you used to be the strong one. Especially when your brain remembers who you were but your nervous system now replies:

“Absolutely not. Have a sit down.”

The funny thing is that silence changes people. Not just external silence, but internal silence. The moments where the old noise falls away and you are left facing yourself without distraction. No performance. No productivity theatre. No pretending.

Just you. A body. A mind. A cup of tea. And whatever remains underneath the wreckage.

Which sounds terribly dramatic until somebody drops a spoon in the sink and ruins the mystical atmosphere.

We also wandered into the idea that healing is not always becoming who you were before. Sometimes healing is becoming someone entirely different. A quieter version. A slower version. A more honest version.

That can feel frightening in a world addicted to speed.

But perhaps there is wisdom in slowing down enough to hear your own thoughts again. Perhaps there is power in rebuilding carefully instead of performing recovery for social media. Perhaps some people are not broken. Perhaps they are simply between identities.

And perhaps that hollow feeling so many people carry right now is not personal failure. Perhaps it is the sound of old structures collapsing.

We also touched on meditation after neurological chaos. Trying to visualise after a stroke is a very odd experience. The inner world can become blurry. Meditation changes shape. Focus changes shape. Everything becomes softer around the edges.

So lately I have been sitting with frequencies, breathing exercises, crown chakra sounds, pineal meditations, and long quiet pauses watching canal water move under spring sunlight. Not because I have suddenly become an enlightened woodland sage. Mostly because my nervous system currently behaves like an over tea’d squirrel.

But small practices matter. Tiny moments matter. Sitting still for five minutes matters. Listening to birds instead of doomscrolling matters. Speaking kindly to yourself matters.

Especially when rebuilding.

Today’s show was not really about sickness. It was about adaptation. About continuing. About broadcasting after the silence.

And honestly? That feels like the real magic.

Thank you to everyone listening on the radio stream, through the website, and over on YouTube while I slowly remember how to do this again.

The signal is still here. A little cracked around the edges perhaps. But still transmitting.

And that will do nicely for now.

— Kate Silveness

🌙 Dark Moon Rocks Radio Psychology, storytelling, strange thoughts, cosmic weather, canal mornings, hypnosis, poetry, and conversations from the edge of reinvention.

Tuesday 17th February 2026 Morning Show

Yesterday’s Dark Moon Radio Morning Show has been trimmed to a focused one-hour listen — clear, steady, and easy to sit with.

Kate Silveness

Yesterday’s Dark Moon Radio Morning Show has been trimmed to a focused one-hour listen — clear, steady, and easy to sit with.

We explored the energy of the Fire Horse — not as superstition, but as metaphor. Fire as ignition. Horse as momentum. What happens when instinct meets acceleration. Where are you running on pure spark… and where are you burning out?

From there we moved into dopamine — the modern fire element. The chase. The hit. The scroll. The reward loop. We talked about how to work with that wiring rather than letting it drag you by the reins.

Threaded through it all was the Tao — the quiet current beneath the flames. Effortless alignment. Knowing when to move and when to stand still. When to push, and when to allow.

And yes — solar eclipses. Those strange interruptions of light. The reminder that even the brightest things are sometimes shadowed. Not as catastrophe, but as recalibration.

This was a show about energy management. About timing. About riding your own fire without being consumed by it.

If you need something thoughtful but grounded — something to steady the nervous system while still lighting a spark — this one will land well.
